Undercutting door frames

Cutting a plank around a door frame profile is fiddly. Cutting the frame so the plank slides under it is quick and looks better.

What you need

A jamb saw (undercut saw) or a flush-cut hand saw, an offcut of your new floor, and a piece of underlay if you are using one. An oscillating multi-tool with a flush-cut blade also works.

Step by step

  1. Make a height guide. Put a piece of underlay on the subfloor and a loose plank, face down, on top of it. For tile, use a tile on a layer the thickness of the adhesive bed.
  2. Saw the frame. Lay the saw flat on the guide and cut into the door frame and architrave. Keep the blade flat against the guide.
  3. Clear the cut-off. Remove the slice with a chisel and vacuum out the dust.
  4. Slide the floor under. The plank now slides under the frame. Keep the expansion gap behind it: the frame hides it.

Also check the door

A thicker new floor can stop the door swinging. Measure from the new floor height to the bottom of the door before you start. If it will rub, take the door off and trim it, leaving at least 5 mm clearance, more over thick rugs.
